LAPROSCOPIC ASSISTED VAGINAL HYSTERECTOMY

Minimally Invasive – Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy in Jacksonville

What is a Hysterectomy?

One of the most common surgical procedures in the United States, a hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus, and in certain conditions may include the fallopian tubes and ovaries. Common reasons for performing a hysterectomy include: benign fibroid and other types of tumors, uterine cancer, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, genital prolapse, and chronic pelvic pain.

What is Minimally Invasive Laparoscope Surgery?

During Laparoscopic surgery, small incisions are made through which slender tubes are inserted to provide passage for the laparoscope and other micro-surgical tools. The laparoscope and the tiny camera attached to it provide a continuous image that is viewed on a television screen by your surgeon. Laparoscopic surgery eliminates the need for large surgical incisions resulting in faster recovery times, less trauma and less internal and external scaring.

What is a Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH)?

Minimally invasive Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) is an advanced surgical procedure using a laparoscope to guide the removal of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes and ovaries through the vagina. During the procedure, the uterus is detached from ligaments that attach it to other structures in the pelvis using micro laparoscopic tools. If the fallopian tubes and ovaries are to be removed, they are also detached from their ligaments and blood supply.

What are the Advantages of LAVH?

Post-operative discomfort, scaring, and recovery time from LAVH are significantly less than with a traditional abdominal hysterectomy, which requires both a vaginal incision and a 4-6 inch incision in the abdomen. LAVH is also less physically traumatic and has distinct advantages. It can allow for a vaginal hysterectomy in patients who have not had children.
